If you have been out and about on Vaseux Lake this past spring and summer, you may have noticed black rubber matting along the shoreline of the lake.
Catherine Tarasoff has been hired by The Canadian Wildlife Service to manage and control the invasive yellow flag iris (YFI) on shoreline properties. This project is aimed at protecting and restoring our lake ecosystems from one of the most destructive aquatic invaders.
What We Are Doing
To treat YFI, a special fish-friendly material is used that resembles thin rubber matting. The matting is carefully placed over the YFI plants to suffocate them, and will remain in place for 2-3 years until the iris is completely dead. The time it takes to eliminate the plants depends on how well-established they are.
In some areas, extensive matting has been used, while in others, only small sections have been treated. This method is safe for the surrounding environment and allows the lake’s ecosystem to recover naturally.
Why We Should Be Concerned About Yellow Flag Iris
Invasive Species: YFI was once sold as a decorative shoreline plant, but it has since become one of the worst aquatic invaders in our region.
Ecosystem Damage: YFI buries shoreline rocks, which are crucial for water bugs that feed a variety of animals. Once these rocks are covered, it disrupts the food chain and damages the entire lake ecosystem.
Toxicity: The plant is toxic to animals, and nothing will eat it. Birds tend to avoid nesting in it, preferring native cattails, and even turtles stay clear of YFI.
Organic Buildup: YFI collects detritus, creating thick organic mats that interfere with nutrient availability in the lake, further degrading water quality.
Help Us Stop the Spread
If you have yellow flag iris on your property, please remove it to help prevent further spread around the lake. By taking action now, we can protect our natural ecosystems for future generations.
Join Us Next Spring!
Although the summer field season is finished, Catherine will be returning next spring to continue her work. She will be looking for volunteers who would like to join her for a day of YFI control. It’s easy work, and many hands make light work!
If you’re interested in volunteering or have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the VLSA. Let’s work together to protect our lakes from this invasive species!
