At a board meeting on November 2nd, 2017, the RDOS (Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen) has approved an additional $700,000 towards the creation of the wetland to cleanse effluents from the Okanagan Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The project now has the million dollars required to create the wetland.
Final approval for the project is still needed and we expect it to be approved when the issue is tabled again at an RDOS Board meeting scheduled for November 16th, 2017.
This turnaround would not have happened without the help of our two Regional Directors, Tom Siddon and Terry Schafer, as well as the Vaseux Lake Stewardship Association raising their voice publicly on how important this was for the sensitive environment of Vaseux Lake.
The Vaseux Lake Stewardship Association Board has initiated a meeting for the 18th of December with MP Richard Cannings, MLA Linda Larsen, Janine Dougall from the RDOS, Shaun Reimer from the Ministry of Lands, Forest and Natural Resources, and James Littley from the Okanagan Basin Water Board to discuss the creation of the wetland, the siltation of the north end of the lake, the milfoil cultivation and the overall quality of the water.
The VLSA will not rest until those issues are resolved.
