On May 10th, we posted an article here at VaseuxLake.com about a petition that was launched by the Vaseux Lake Stewardship Association at Change.org to oppose the exclusion of 1.2 hectares (2.97 acres) of land from the Agricultural Land Reserve and to oppose the development of 35 campsites on the eastern shore of Vaseux Lake.
14,690 folks signed that petition!
On August 17th, we learned that the ALC (Agricultural Land Commission), in a unanimous decision, refused the Proposal to exclude 1.2 ha of the 4.3 ha property in order to develop a 35 unit campground on the Property, due in part for the following reasons:
The Panel considered the scale and intensity of the proposed campground uses and the associated infrastructure necessary for such a non-farm use. In the Panel’s experience, the introduction of commercial tourism uses immediately adjacent to agricultural operations often results in conflict that negatively affects the farm operation. Additionally, the access to the campground and the proposed septic field present additional impacts to the continuity and integrity of the agricultural portion of the Property.
The Panel finds that the use of the Proposal Area for a 35 unit RV campground would impact the agricultural utility of the Property.
The property owner has one year to appeal the decision.
You may access the AGRICULTURAL LAND COMMISSION FILE 60269 to read the full report and reasons for the ALC’s denial.
The VLSA would like to thank everyone who supported our efforts to keep that land in the ALR and a 35-campsite campground off our lake.
